Facebook/YouTube: An Employer's Candygram of Data for the Digital World

First:
Now that I'm floating randomly in webspace having posted all the different subjects I initially wished to cover, I figured for the first post I'd post a discussion. This topic applies to most college students and all employees in general as more of the already established workforce begins to join services like facebook and myspace as they are being offered more freely.

One of the few things that sickens me about the current trend of research into employees is how personal the employers feel they need to go these days into understanding who their employees are on and off the job.

First, let me say, yes, I believe some of this information can be helpful into determining the character of the employee but, really, if the employee isn't working at the time of the action and is not breaking any laws should employers be able to use it against the employee in terms of job selection or retainment?

As a college student, and son of an overprotective mother, I have heard scores of stories about college students losing their opportunities at fortune 100 companies simply by posting a shot of them performing some odd activity on facebook or because a video was posted of them doing something against the "character" of the organization.

How does the kegstand an excessive partier did on his 21st birthday or the seductive clothing a girl wore to a local club affect their job performance in any way?

As the limits of our current technology are constantly being pushed against and new advancements in technology shift that very limit where are we to draw the line?

Please, I'm curious to your opinions in the matter.

Interesting question...on one hand, individuals should be entitled to some privacy... in today's world, background checks of potential employees are pretty standard and I agree with the need to perform them. Having said that, I also firmly believe that what is in Facebook should stay in Facebook...and that it should not be used in making hiring decisions. There's a lot of fooling around with some of the postings there - and just cause something is written - doesn't make it a fact... College kids are, after all, just kids in college ... :-)

On the other hand, when you get a job and go to work for a company, you are a representative of that company and should conduct yourself accordingly when out in public and acting on the company's behalf.

I think that this proves to be a very good debate question. why stop living the life you want on your own time because of the influences which are present when on the clock?
I think that although it shouldn't matter, it does and always will. On a dramaturgical standpoint, the lives which people hold outside of work is the backstage which should never conflict with that of the front stage (the actual working environment)...either way, the two may clash and troubles occur because people have expectations within a company that they will be needing to depend on...
now, enough with the tecnical mumbo-jumbo...i think it's stupid that people care either way...and screw them yo. oh, and you and i share the same over-protective mother...i know how it is...but i lovey her :)

I am confused on which standpoint the first commenter takes...though it looks like he/she/it takes the side of most users of Facebook. I wrote an editorial in my school paper about the troubling fact employers AND future employers, alongside the likes of administration, coaches, parents, etc., look at Facebook and can see what pictures were posted along with other doo-dads.

I think that people should be able to post any picture they want. But is the mass of users really proud of the fact they can get so drunk they can't stand? What's worse is that these, mostly underaged kids, are drinking beer ILLEGALLY and posting it on the web for all to see. As if pictures aren't enough to incriminate a person...there are certainly more repercussions than addressed in the semi-slanted question you posted.

In my opinion:
Should employers hire people who believe in breaking the rules? Should they hire people who don't care about how they present themselves? My answer is simply: no they shouldn't.

Once hired, drink excessively if you wish, do kegstands and wear just enough cloth to be considered "dressed"... but don't post it for all to see in pictures showing yourself sloshed and naked. Why would you want the bad PR for yourself?

Imagine if that is reflected onto a company at a social gathering...

I agree with the previous posts. What happens off the clock should really stay off the clock. If companies want drones with no social impulses, then maybe they should get mechanized robots. Of course that doesn't really work in the office. Anyway, I think that people do deserve privacy and that they shouldn't always have to worry about their actions outside of work affecting their job. I would hate to look over my shoulder each time I go out. However, I do realize that companies have reputations.

I think it all depends on where you want to go and what your life goals are....You need to have a vision of your future that you are working towards...where do you really want to be 10 years from now, and what do you need to do to make that a reality...Then make your decisions with those life goals/direction in mind.

When it comes to the workplace, companies today are looking for the leaders of tomorrow - those with an interest in continual refinement of their skill sets, who possess an ability to think strategically, work collaboratively, think innovatively, deliver on commitments, all the while possessing and continually demonstrating core values (honesty,integrity, and more). The Leaders of tomorrow ARE aware of and sensitive to the image and reputation of the company they work for, and keep that in mind when they are representing the company.
